Synopsis

Need a hand?

After eighteen months undercover, FBI Agent Ken Nguyen accidentally exposes his identity in front of the cutthroat Reynoso Cartel. Taken hostage on a speedboat fleeing the law, Ken disarms his captor—just as Ken’s boss, Don McGuire, recklessly shoots Ken and the boat’s gas tank. KA-BOOM! Ken barely escapes the explosion, but feels betrayed by his boss and fellow agents. So instead of returning to shore, Ken steals $100,000 of cartel money, swims away and starts a new life on his own terms.

One year later, Ken’s living out of a van on the Southern California coast while his former partner, Michelle Pressley, heads up the FBI’s San Diego field office. Meanwhile, Don’s trigger-happy ways have landed him an indefinite suspension, during which he’s convinced himself that Ken is still alive. Don implores Michelle to investigate, only for Michelle to tell Don that he’s crazy and needs to accept Ken’s death.

Ken, now going by the name “Johnny Do,” is down to his last thousand dollars, making ends meet as a handyman and bouncer at the beachside bar of his only friend, Sandy Giles—who harbors a secret crush on him. One night at Sandy’s bar, Johnny stops a beefy meathead, Deuce, from roughing up a drunk young lady, Ginger. Johnny sends the flirty Ginger home with her mother, Lola, who promises to hire Johnny as repayment. Later that night, Deuce returns for revenge with four goons and a crowbar; but Johnny uses his unrivaled judo skills to send them home bruised and broken.

The next morning, a well-dressed man requests a meeting over breakfast, informing Johnny that Ginger is his daughter, Lola is his wife and those goons he beat to a pulp are his employees. Johnny realizes he’s sitting face-to-face with Victor Reynoso, the fearsome, elusive leader of the Reynoso Cartel, who knows that Johnny is actually the presumed-dead Ken Nguyen. Furious about the stolen $100,000, but intrigued by Johnny’s abilities, Victor threatens to expose Johnny’s secret unless he steals a Diego Rivera painting out of a warehouse patrolled by two security guards. Drawing on his undercover skills, Johnny pulls off the heist with nothing more than a boxcutter, a painter’s facemask and rancid hardboiled eggs. Riding high off the adrenaline, Johnny realizes he misses the “juice” of his old life.

Arriving at Victor’s oceanside mansion with the painting, Johnny fends off Ginger’s advances, squares off with Victor’s mischievous teenage son, Rico and learns of Lola’s desire to knock off her husband. Impressed by Johnny’s heist and needing a “professional” on his crew, Victor offers Johnny a lucrative opportunity to join him, an offer that a staked-out Michelle Pressley witnesses Johnny accept.

Slick, thrilling and fun, The Handyman explores both sides of the law through the eyes of a man who lives for the action.
