Synopsis

Based on the book The Righteous Few: Two Who Made a Difference

This remarkable, true story of courage, compassion, and rescue is about a young married Dutch Christian couple named Frans and Mien Wijnakker. During the war under the brutal occupation of Nazi Germany, the Wijnakkers, despite great risk and danger, save the lives of over two dozen Jews over a two-year period.

Frans and Mien were just ordinary people, raising their family of four small children and just trying to get by under the tough conditions in Holland during the war. Then, while doing his black market business, a simple call for help leads Frans to sneak a young Jewish girl, a friend of Anne Frank’s, out of Amsterdam and home to his place in the countryside. Mien goes along and becomes the backbone of the rescue operation they build. At its height, they place a number of Jewish refugees throughout the local villages plus have up to 10 refugees in their own home.

Two Among the Righteous Few provides numerous twists and turns: moments of possible betrayal and accidental discovery, instances of danger and amusement that make this story entertaining, dramatic, and inspirational. The two local authority figures, the police chief and the parish priest, are constant thorns to Frans and Mien in their rescue activity. Numerous challenges and dangers come up: problems in the rescue network to raids by the Germans on their own home. Among their biggest challenges is what to do with a young married Jewish couple taken into their own home, where the wife is already pregnant. How do you get a baby born to a Jewish woman in Nazi-occupied Holland—near impossible!

Amidst the horrific tragedy of the Holocaust comes a positive story that is also true. In this age of growing divisiveness, intolerance, and fear of those who are different, audiences keep telling Marty that this a story that must be told. For nine years as Marty has been speaking in a wide variety of venues around the country about this inspirational story, audiences also keep remarking how this story would make a great movie!
